To be invited to an exhibition means that you do not have to go through a selection process resided over by a jury. For instance, all summissions to the National Academy of Design's (NAD) annual show is by jury. The jury is often comprised of officials from whatever group is producing the exhibit. Often you must ship the painting at your own expense and if your work is not selected it can be costly.

To be invited to a "World Fair" or exposition means you awere chosen by the curator of the Fair's art exhibit, thus it is an honor in and of itself.
