RSW's Diary Comments

An image of Spring Comes Again, Chalk
Spring Comes Again,, Chalk
Offered as an example of a typical "little farm house."

• Woodward did not keep records of the pastels he called "chalk drawings."

Editor's Note:

We cannot help wondering if this pastel is the same "farm house" as the subject of The Little Farmhouse, also exhibiting at this shown. That would not be uncommon for Woodward at this stage of his career. He wanted these comparisons made between his oil pastel paintings for how he could render very similar likenesses in both mediums. Some are so close, it is hard to tell them apart. ⮟

Boston Globe, March 10, 1931, by A.J. Philpott

Farmhouse is a realistic picture, but it is beautiful realism. That old house is painted in a masterly way and the fresh, color beauty of the whole landscape is something to revel in."

Note long-time Boston Globe's art critic, A.J. Philpott's, praise of this pastel's realism, which is high praise for a pastel. This would not normally be the case for this medium due to its natural softness.

⮜ This article linked to this exhibit created a great deal of confusion for many years. First, the caption to the picture is incorrect... the image is of the canvas, Portrait of a Shadow . Woodward considered naming "Portrait," "The Little Farmhouse," but did not do it. There IS a painting named The Little Farmhouse and it exhibits at the SAME show and is mentioned in the SAME article to the left and it is a winter scene.

What is really confounding, is that there is this pastel simply named "Farmhouse," ALSO at the same show! Check the link below for the whole story ⮟
