This is a very atmospheric deep woods painting common to Woodward's work early in his career. They are painted just outside the back door of his first studio Redgate towards the small brook and surrounding woods.

What is really unique and interesting about this painting is that RSW signed this unnamed piece with a red "W" instead of his trademark red "S." RSW did experiment and varied his signature early on. However, this is the ONLY example we have where he signed a red "W." (SEE PICTURE: right)

A closer look at the lower right scenery

We understand the picture of this piece is not great. We are working on getting a better image; however, the lower-right corner's moonlit blue hues are beautiful. RSW often painted setting sun paintings such as his Hallgarten Prize winning Between Setting Sun and Rising Moon or Silent Evening but only this piece and Winter Night feature the moonlight filtering through the trees.

We thank its current owner for their generosity, in both time and access to this wonderful painting. We couldn't be more appreciative.
