As unfinished, Woodward would not have written or commented in his artwork diary. All the works of art were framed for their preservation in 2017.
While It is more a sketch than a chalk, RSW did begin to apply this unfinished chalk of the Statson Farm in West Hawley with white chalk which seems to be the color he typically started all chalks. The drawing shows the layout of the barns in relation to the sheds and farmhouse. We do not know why RSW did not complete this piece and are very disappointed to not get to see what he would have done with the subject. On the High-Resolution page we have prepared a graphic showing the area of the barns RSW painted in Farmland Ledge and The Silver Barn.
This incomplete artwork was found in a forgotten shipping crate stored in an attic, as seen below, along with twenty other pieces. The crate is in excellent condition and is a wonderful example of how RSW shipped his paintings about the country to exhibit in various shows.
