• Woodward did not keep records of the pastels he called "chalk drawings."
We do not know the location of this pastel painting. It is a pretty big hill with a farm on top of it which is rare. What is not rare is for some places to simply be higher than others. For instance, the highest points of Buckland (MA) barely exceed 1600ft in elevation but both Heath to the north and Hawley to the west are NOT hills but the town elevations exceed Buckland's by a couple hundred feet. It would make more sense if this was simply something to that effect.
We know this is an early chalk drawing
from the hard border RSW added and how it was framed to feature the border.
We could not locate any mention or record of this chalk drawing ever exhibiting,
therefore, we have no information whatsoever.
We would like to note
that while this chalk drawing appears to be a pure landscape painting if you look to the upper right, on top
of the hill, there appears to be a farm.
