RSW's Diary Comments

"Painted 1930. A winter painting of a smoking, picturesque log mill, set low in the canvas in a ravine (but little of the stream showing), log piles showing in the lower foreground, all against the dark shadowed slope of a heavily wooded hill (up half of canvas) the sun touching the tree tops here and there. Painted the winter I lived in Griswoldville (1929-30) of 'Freddie May's Mill' up the Jacksonville Road near Halifax gorge. (Mill went out in the hurricane). Laid aside in my frame room for a few years, as an unfinished sketch, then bought from my Buckland studio by Dr. Lunt's daughter, then Mrs. Russell D"Oench of Maryland and Washington, D.C.. Now Mrs. John B. Ackerman of the American embassy in London where Winter Mill now hangs."
