Additional Notes

J.H. Miller Article April, 1928
Clipping of the article reviewing the Spring Exhibit

There is a chalk drawing of the same scene with the same title. There is also another chalk drawing that appeared with this piece at the 1928 J. H. Miller Co. Galleries Exhibition titled, The Patient Angel, that contains the angel without his trumpet overseeing another barnyard.

Right: Springfield Union, by Jeanette Matthews

"In a city where one-man shows are as rare as they are in Springfield a chance to see 36 of Robert Strong Woodward's latest pictures is a treat indeed."

On the clipping itself, you will see the handwritten note by RSW, "a good article." Jeanette Matthews was, at the time, a highly regarded local art critic and reviewed numerous exhibitions where Woodward was represented.

Unknown Publisher
A clipping of The Trumpeting Angel
from and unknown publisher.

On the left: A clipping from an unknown publisher proclaiming The Trumpeting Angel, "NEW ENGLAND SCENE HIT OF ART EXHIBIT" in reference to Woodward's first One-Man Show at the home of Ronald T. Lyman. We do not know if this was hyperpole or not but this exhibition was a, sort of, coming out party for Woodawrd in Boston after much success in previous years at the Boston Art Club's annual exhibition.
