This is one of those mysteries we do not know if we will ever sort out.
As wonderful as Woodward was in many ways, offering clear details was not one of them,
especially for his painting diary which he did not begin to compile until the early 1940s
and through his retirement in the early 1950s. Not only did he write it mostly from memory
but he did not use any of his many scrapbooks and ledgers to confirm his recall.
Worse than that, for a man who paid great attention to the details, he did not give them.
We have numerous examples of him leaving out any kind of explanation, such as, an owner
changing a painting he gave a generic name. Or maybe, he forgot that he called it,
"Northfield Valley" in a notebook giving Ms. Wilson the option of naming it herself and
that is the name he remembered and this painting name was just simply a placeholder...
It is possible that this painting was later renamed Spring Drifts by Ms. Wilson herself.
"Sold in May of 1933 to Miss Myra Wilson, Principal of Northfield Seminary for $300.00"
