Additional Notes

This painting was exhibited at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in March, 1948, at the 6th biennial exhibition of contemporary American paintings. We know nothing else about the painting. However, many of Woodard's August paintings at this time were from the Heath Pasture and his beloved Beech Tree.

Another possibility is that this painting is the same subject as another "August" painting, In the August Sun, seen to the left. Actually, the subject of a fine American home like In the August Sun seems appropriate to send to Virginia. Woodward liked the scene very much and since it went to a different region than New England, it is possible that he made a another painting of the same subject with a slight variation of its name.
