Up and down look at two North Hadley paintings
Up and down look at two North Hadley paintings

This painting is the original name of the painting later named The Village in Spring after it was cut down to 30" x 27". Here are Woodward's diary comments from The Village in Spring:

"Painted about 1932. A 27 x 30 cut down from an original 30 x 36 [ April in North Hadley ] of more sky, painted back of the village of North Hadley showing village church spire, trees, houses etc. with small reflecting stream with a boat on it in middle foreground. Bought from the studio by Mrs. L. K. Thorne of 740 Park Ave. N.Y.C., friends of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence K. Lunt."

Editor's notes:

There are 4 names associated with this subject and only 3 actual paintings. Two paintings are oils, and the third is a pastel (or as Woodward called them "chalk drawing").

Two of the four names are linked to this painting, the original, 1931, 36" x 30" which was later cut down to a 30" x 27" canvas and renamed The Village in Spring around 1934.

The image used to illustrate the subject of this painting is from an old image found in a folder of the website's founder, Dr. Mark. Initially it was assumed to be The Village in Spring because it was the ONLY painting of this subject we had an image. The image is a sepia print. However, the sepia and the picture did not match! In the illustration to the right, you can see that the picture had extra scenery- an inch more on the left and two inches on the right.

We have no idea what the 6 inches of sky looks like. It is gone forever. None of the other paintings has the missing sky.

By the process of elimination, we have determined that the unknown painting in the picture we found is most likely April in the Village. The digital image was dated from 2006. There has always been an artwork page for April in the Village but we do not know where Dr. Mark got the name. It does not appear in any record we know of, in fact, we believe it was mixed up with another name we DO have a record for - The Village in April, the pastel.

Additional Notes

The Church and Meeting Hall
The Church and Meeting Hall... the distinct
steeple can be seen clearly in the painting. Past that
church one can see the bell tower of the other church.

To the right: is the Congregational Church and Town Meeting Hall of the North Hadley Historic District that appeal in the painting behind the two barns.
