RSW's Diary Comments

"Painted winter of 1946-7. Painted in the studio from one of my very early canvases which was made the first years I was painting. I always liked the theme and composition and altho poor technically always saved the old canvas to repaint some time. A gaunt, stark portrait of a plain old barn (once standing on Hog Hollow Road, now torn down) with snow on the roof and old wagons and tools in the open lean-to shed. Dramatic, very dark pine woods back of the barn, filling all the upper canvas, with just a small triangle of sky showing with lavender, sunlit clouds. Sled and foot tracks in the white foreground. A rather dramatic, simple canvas of which I am quite fond. Sold to Mrs. Harvard M. Hanna of Cleveland O. for her home in Santa Barbara: Feb. 1953"

Comments in a notebook by RSW:

"Barn in warm browns and grays with pale green wagon under shed against background of very dark green trees. Brilliant bit of sky with lavender and pale yellows. Blue tracks and pale violet shadows in snow."
