Many of the early to mid-1920s paintings are not in the Painting Diary. Woodward did not start compiling it until the early 1940s and did not have a full accounting to go by. This could be attributed to the two studio fires he had between 1922 and 1940.
In the mid-1920s Woodward exhibited two painting with "Guardian" in the name, this painting and another by the name of Road Guardians (1925-'26). The term does not appear again in the Exhibition List until 1952 with Maple Guardians. However, we know from a diary comment made in From Our Forefathers that Woodward called a certain kind of Maple tree, "Guardian Maples." It is not a technical term we could find in any search of the name and so this might be something regional. If you have heard the term and know what it means, please Contact Us.
