"Painted in 1939."
If it weren't for us having a picture of this painting that is notably different than
At Haying Time we would believe they were the same painting. This painting only exhibits at the Vose Gallery in Boston ('36)
and At Haying Time exhibits almost everywhere except Vose.
There is also as short a diary comment about a painting
as it gets and on top of that, it is wrong.
This painting is similar to but not quite the same scene as
At Haying Time with the exception of the man raking hay at the Halifax house in Vermont.
But also, and this is important, the aspect ratio of these two paintings are different. At Haying Time has an aspect ratio of 1.2
whereas, Haying Time is a 1.11 making it more square with a couple of inches of additional canvas on the bottom.
There are typically two "haying times" in a given year, mid-to-late June and October. Woodward mostly painted the June period. See
Just After Haying Time for another scene.
