Additional Notes

One of Woodward's earliest known chalk drawings this drawing first appeared at the Salmagundi Club in New York City in 1925. It would exhibit 3 more times over the next 22 years suggesting Woodward kept it in his personal collection.

What is interesting about this artwork is that RSW made two other similar paintings around the same time period. One is Silent River pictured to the right and Evening Stream #1.

Though Woodward made chalk drawings early in his career, he did not begin to exhibit them with any regularity until after 1927. In fact, between 1927 and '28, Woodward made more chalks than oils (60 chalks to 40 oils). However, Woodward was also re-tooling his painting style and so a large number of the oils could have made the fire heap and destroyed.
