Robert Strong Woodward had five different studios during his lifetime as an artist who painted New England scenes. Three of these studios were consumed by fires in which he lost many valuable paintings and chalk
drawings. This section of our website is devoted to showing you pictures of, and giving you information about, all five of his beautiful studios.
     When he first returned from California in 1911, he converted a small farm outbuilding into his first studio, Redgate. This burned to the ground from an overheated wood stove in 1922. The second studio, at the Hiram Woodward place, was hit by lightning in 1934 and also burned completely to the ground. The third studio, in Heath, was discovered burned to the ground during deer hunting week in 1950 and was presumed to be a case of accident or arson. Two of his studio buildings remain (The Little Shop, bought in 1931, and the Southwick place, bought in 1934), the former now a small home and the latter preserved just as he left it when he died in 1957.
